ADHD: Clarity and Healing through IFS Therapy
A 2-Day Online Workshop with Carol Shilliday
February 11 & 12, 2027
There are many misconceptions and an overall lack of understanding regarding ADHD. It can be difficult to accurately identify, and many individuals with ADHD remain undiagnosed until later in life. Adults with undiagnosed ADHD may present in clinical settings with long-standing depression and anxiety that can appear resistant to treatment.
This workshop will provide clarity by offering up-to-date information on what ADHD is and is not. We will discuss current understandings of the neurobiological and executive functioning differences associated with ADHD, as well as the parts that may emerge within the Internal Family Systems (IFS) model. We will also explore how individuals with ADHD may present in clinical settings and review considerations related to assessment and diagnosis.
We will then explore how IFS can support healing and transformation for individuals with ADHD, who often carry shame related to the messages they have received about their differences in school, work, and society. These experiences can lead to persistent and intense negative self talk and result in extreme managers, firefighters, exiles and polarizations.
Through an IFS-informed approach, protective parts are helped to shift out of their extreme roles, allowing space for unburdening the pain and shame carried by exiled parts. An important step in this process is working through the acceptance journey and helping clients develop an updated understanding of ADHD as a difference in neurobiology rather than a personal failure. The positive aspects of ADHD can then be invited in. This allows individuals to more effectively put strategies in place to live well with ADHD. This is a journey from pain and shame toward greater clarity, acceptance, and compassion for themselves and their differences.
This online workshop will be interactive and include a blend of didactic instruction, case examples, meditations and experientials, and large-group discussion. Participants are encouraged to ask questions, share insights, and actively engage in instructor-led dialogue throughout the training. The online workshop is limited to 50 participants.

What to expect from this workshop.....
We’ll explore ADHD through:
* current understandings of neurobiology and executive functioning
* a neurodiversity-affirming perspective
* and the Internal Family Systems (IFS) model
From shame to understanding
When looking at ADHD through an IFS lens, many ADHD-related struggles begin to make more sense:
* perfectionism, masking, and overcompensating as manager parts
* avoidance and numbing as firefighter parts
* and the shame underneath as exiled parts
From there, the work shifts, from trying to “fix” the person to helping their system feel understood and supported.
What we’ll focus on
Throughout the 2 days, we’ll explore:
* how ADHD shows up through both neurobiology and parts dynamics
* the internal experience of ADHD, including self-talk, shame, and overwhelm
* how to work with protective parts and support unburdening
* ways to help clients move toward acceptance, clarity, and self-compassion
Who This Is For
-
Graduates of an IFSI Level 1 and above Training.
Continuing Education
This workshop is pending approval for 11 IFS-CE credits, which may be applied toward IFS certification or recertification
