The Wisdom Beneath Addictive and Extreme Practices:
A Deep Exploration into Extreme Protectors, Trauma and Addictive Systems with IFS led by Cece Sykes
April 13-16, 2027- Connecticut, USA

A 4-Day In-Person Immersive Experiential Non-Residential Retreat led by Cece Sykes who is an expert in this field.

This Workshop will take place from April 13-16, 2027 in Avon, Connecticut, USA.

Addictive behaviors appear as problems to control, resist, or eliminate. Yet beneath the urgency of these practices, is a far more complex system. Parts of us, firefighters, compelled to use anything that works to soothe pain and regulate overwhelm, are embattled with a complementary set of parts, managers, equally compelled to control and fix them. Underneath this conflict the of deep-rooted shame and loss, traumatized exiles remain unreachable and increasingly burdened.

There are many models and competing approaches for understanding addictive processes with food, substances, screens, etc. Many are behavior-focused and focus on referring clients out for treatment. While this may be very helpful at times, it can create uncertainty around what clinicians can do to truly support healing.

Internal Family Systems (IFS) offers a paradigm shift and compassionate new options for working with the whole system.  Rather than viewing compulsive practices as pathology or failure, the IFS model understands addictive processes as systemic, developmental protection shaped by attachment wounds, loss and trauma. Managers have legitimate needs and fears, yet the firefighter parts they battle are not the enemy.

When clients create inner self-to-part connections and protectors feel respected and understood, self-energy is more available and parts engaged in self-contempt and using practices soften and shift. Time and space opens up for vulnerable, traumatized parts to connect and let go of burdens they carried for decades.

Healing becomes possible not through control or shame, but through relationship, understanding and compassion.

In this deeply immersive four-day experiential in-person workshop, participants are invited to an embodied exploration of how Internal Family Systems can work with the whole system, both protectors and exiles, to transform our understanding of extreme firefighters, underlying trauma and pathways for healing.

This workshop is designed for IFS Level 1 trained clinicians and practitioners seeking to deepen their confidence and capacity to work with extreme firefighters, trauma and addictive systems — while also exploring the ways their own internal parts and legacy burdens shape therapeutic presence. It is pending approval for 16 IFS-CE credits, which may be applied toward IFS certification or recertification.

More than a workshop, this is an opportunity to slow down, deepen, and experience the work from the inside out.
